Nurse logs are a fallen elder tree that as they decay, they provide the ideal conditions for young trees, plants and fungi to grow - a generational handoff of sorts. One of my favorite parts of the forest ecological system. This painting was inspired by a trip to the Hoh Rainforest in the Olympics where every new form of life continues to grow off the beautiful decay of others.
